Invisalign aligners are a type of aligner that is made of see-through resin. This allows the aligners to remain undetected by others for the duration of the treatment. How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign aligners operate similarly to traditional braces. Aligners are made specially for the patient, and the aligners slot over the dental arches, putting light pressure on the teeth. This pressure slowly pushes the teeth towards the correct position achieved at the end of the treatment. Traditional braces are adjusted over months in order for them to continuously move the teeth towards the correct alignment. Aligners can’t be adjusted. Instead, the patient wears a new set every fortnight, and successively the teeth become aligned.
An initial appointment with one of our oral surgeons will begin the treatment. They will take some digital images of the patient’s oral cavity and upload the images to our system. Our equipment will display the current state of the patient’s teeth and the desired state of the patient’s teeth. This will be helpful to picture how the teeth will look when they are properly aligned. Our team will be able to tell the patient how long the treatment should last and how many Invisalign aligners the patient will wear during that time.
After the appointment, our dental lab will create the patient’s Invisalign aligners, and the patient will come in to pick them up. Patients will wear between 12 to 48 pairs of Invisalign aligners during their treatment plan, each one for two weeks. Our oral surgeon will give the patient 3 or 4 sets of Invisalign aligners at one time, with appointments every 6 weeks to check that the treatment is going as planned. Invisalign aligners must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day, and the aligners cannot be worn when eating or drinking except for cold water. Cleaning the aligners is very easy and can be done with a toothbrush and a drop of toothpaste.
